Ten Pieces is an exciting initiative for schools, led by BBC Learning and the BBC Performing Groups that aims to open up the world of classical music to a generation of children and inspire them to develop their own creative responses to ten pieces of music.

The project is based upon films and teaching resources about orchestral classical music.  They are a superb resource for school to use and are available for free.  The Ten Pieces are featured in a BBC Prom concert in the summer.  Schools are also able to upload their responses to the BBC website to be shared nationally.  Some responses each year are chosen to be performed at the Prom Concert at The Royal Albert Hall. All videos and teaching resources are available directly from the BBC website here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0647v1v Year one of the project was focused on primary schools, currently year two is focused on secondary.  Teachers from all phases might find it useful to look at both year’s resources.

Surrey Music Hub is supporting BBC 10 pieces in the following ways:

• Promotion and publicity of the projects to schools.

• Featuring BBC 10 pieces in ensemble performances.  Tickets to Surrey Ensemble Concerts can be made available to school groups.  Please contact hugh.craig@surreycc.gov.uk to discuss a visit from your school.

• Mass School Orchestra Events.  With Music Hub Support several of our Local Schools Networks have set up mass orchestra events.  These events are open to all schools in a local area.  Each School can bring its own musicians to join in with a mass school orchestra of up to 150 performers.  The music played is based upon the BBC 10 pieces with differentiated parts for all players.  The events are supported by Surrey Arts musicians.  In 2016 Mass Orchestra days have been set up in Redhill, Camberley and Tandridge.

• Inclusive Orchestra Day.  Using the BBC 10 pieces as an inspirational starting point, the Inclusive orchestra day will be a workshop that will develop young musicians creative musical skills.  The Inclusive Orchestra Day will be open to young musicians who play any instrument and sing.  Musicians of all abilities and experience from all genres are encouraged to come along and perform together.    The event will be supported by performers from the BBC Symphony Orchestra as well as Surrey Music Hub ensemble leaders and teachers.
